A General Election is the election in which federal and state officers, members of Congress and of the general assembly, county and township officers, and other officers appear on the ballot. General Elections are held the 1st Tuesday after the 1st Monday in November of each even-numbered year.
Important Dates
August 25 - First day to submit an Absentee Ballot Request Form
September 17 - Satellite Voting Petition Deadline
October 14 - Absentee ballots ready; First day to vote in-person absentee
October 15 - Satellite voting at Drake Library, 930 Park St, Grinnell - 9 AM to 3 PM (ballots available for all precincts in Poweshiek County)
October 19 - Auditor's Office open 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; Voter pre-registration deadline; Deadline to request an absentee ballot to be mailed
October 26 - Satellite voting at Grinnell College, JRC Building, Room 101, Grinnell - 9 AM to 3 PM (ballots available for all precincts in Poweshiek County)
October 30 - Auditor's Office open 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
October 31 - Auditor's Office open 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
November 2 - In-person absentee voting deadline
November 3 - Election Day. Polls are open from 7 am to 8 pm.
Absentee Ballots will be available from the Poweshiek County Auditor, Melissa Eilander, beginning on October 14, 2026, for the General Election held November 3, 2026.
To Request an Absentee Ballot: A voter may request a ballot by either completing a State of Iowa Official Absentee Ballot Request Form or write on a piece of paper no smaller than 3x5 inches the following information: Name of voter, voter’s address, address to which the ballot should be sent, if different from voter’s address, voter’s date of birth, driver's license number or voter PIN, date and/or name of the election for which the voter is requesting a ballot & voter’s signature and date of signature. The completed request can be mailed to the Auditor’s Office, PO Box 57, Montezuma, IA 50171.
The last day the Auditor’s Office can mail a requested ballot is October 19, 2026.

Absentee voters may also vote in person at the County Auditor's Office beginning October 14, 2026, through November 2, 2026. Courthouse hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Voted absentee ballots must be received in the Auditor's Office by 8:00 pm on Election Day, November 3, 2026.
No voting at the Auditor's Office on Election Day - ALL VOTERS MUST VOTE AT THEIR POLLING LOCATION ON NOVEMBER 3, 2026.
