2026 Primary Election

June 2, 2026

Primary Election
The Primary Election is an election to determine which candidates will qualify for the General Election for a given party. In Iowa you must be a member of the political party of which you wish to vote for in order to participate. This is known as a "closed primary." The primary election is held on the 1st Tuesday following the 1st Monday in June of each even-numbered year.

Primaries will be held for the Democrat and Republican Parties on June 2, 2026. Primaries are closed in the State of Iowa, which means a voter will need to declare a party (Democrat or Republican) to participate in the primary. Primary winners will advance to the November 3, 2026, General Election. Polling places will be open on Election Day from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Candidate Information:

The Poweshiek County Auditor's Office has packets available for those wanting to appear on the 2026 Primary Election ballot for County Attorney, County Recorder, County Treasurer, or County Supervisor.

Candidates will complete an affidavit of candidacy, along with a nomination petition with at least 75 signatures from eligible voters in Poweshiek County.

Candidate filing will begin March 2, 2026, and end at 5:00 p.m. on March 20, 2026.
