
Primaries will be held for the Democrat and Republican Parties on June 2, 2026. Primaries are closed in the State of Iowa, which means a voter will need to declare a party (Democrat or Republican) to participate in the primary. Primary winners will advance to the November 3, 2026, General Election. Polling places will be open on Election Day from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Candidate Information:
The Poweshiek County Auditor's Office has packets available for those wanting to appear on the 2026 Primary Election ballot for County Attorney, County Recorder, County Treasurer, or County Supervisor.
Candidates will complete an affidavit of candidacy, along with a nomination petition with at least 75 signatures from eligible voters in Poweshiek County.
Candidate filing will begin March 2, 2026, and end at 5:00 p.m. on March 20, 2026.
Voter Registration Information:
Pre-registered voters are now required to provide an approved form of identification at the polling place before receiving and casting a regular ballot. Voters who are not pre-registered (such as voters registering on Election Day, and voters changing precincts), must also provide proof of residence. The following documents can be used as proof of residency if they contain your name and current address, and are current within 45 days: Residential lease, utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check or other government document, or a property tax statement (current within 45 days of final payment date). Voters who are unable to provide an approved form of identification (or prove residence if required) may have their identities attested to by another registered voter in the precinct or have the right to cast a provisional ballot. Attesters must also provide an approved form of identification. Pre-Election Day voter registration for this election will close Monday, May 18, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. It is highly recommended that those persons wishing to vote in this election should pre-register on or before May 18, 2026. Eligible persons have the right to register to vote and cast a ballot on Election Day if they can provide proof of both their identity and residency at the polls. Please bring a valid and current photo ID that has an expiration date. If the address on your ID is not current, you will also need to provide proof of residency.
Absentee Voting:
Voters may start sending in absentee ballot request forms beginning Tuesday, March 24, 2026. Absentee ballots requests may be mailed or delivered to the Poweshiek County Auditor, 302 E. Main St., PO Box 57, Montezuma, IA 50171
To request an absentee ballot, you will need to complete an absentee ballot request form. Make sure you fill out the form completely, designate your party affiliation, sign and date the form, and mail it to the Poweshiek County Auditor. Absentee request forms may be requested from the Poweshiek County Auditor's Office, 641-623-5443, on our election website, or on the SOS website https://sos.iowa.gov.
Absentee voting will begin on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. The last day to request an absentee ballot to be mailed to your home is Monday, May 18, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
Voted absentee ballots must be returned to the Poweshiek County Auditor's Office by the close of polls on Election Day (8:00 p.m.)
In-person absentee voting is available at the Poweshiek County Auditor's Office during regular business hours (8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) beginning Wednesday, May 13, 2026, until Monday, June 1, 2026.
Auditor's Office will be open Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for absentee voting.
Satellite voting petition deadline is Thursday, April 16, 2026.
